You don’t have to skip meat to enjoy black bean burgers, as they’re delicious on their own. This recipe is modeled after the Morningstar Chipotle Black Bean Burger patty sold at Costco, which is a favorite of many. Don’t like spicy food? no problem! The chipotle pepper in this recipe is completely optional, though we do like the extra heat and flavor it adds to the recipe.

When making black bean burgers, it is important to use a binder to keep the patty from falling apart. This recipe uses eggs to bind the mixture together. Another important factor in holding the patty together is how finely chopped or mashed all the ingredients are. Make sure all ingredients are finely chopped, which is why it’s best to use a food processor or blender to make black bean burgers. When cooking on the grill or in a pan, be sure to grease well to keep the burgers from sticking.

What can I use instead of eggs to make these vegan?

If you want to make a vegan black bean burger, you will need to replace the eggs called for in this recipe. You can make an egg replacer using flaxseed and water, which is a popular and effective option. To replace 1 egg, simply stir 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons warm water. Let it sit until it gels, then you can use it in recipes. Since this recipe calls for 2 eggs, you will need 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed and 6 tablespoons water.

Frozen Black Bean Burger Instructions:

Black bean burgers freeze well. To freeze, place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then place the tray in the freezer for 4-6 hours, until the patties are frozen solid. Once frozen, remove them from the baking pan and transfer to an airtight container or a resealable plastic freezer bag for long-term storage. These patties will keep for 2-3 months in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, simply thaw overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter at room temperature. There are no ingredients in this recipe that will spoil at room temperature, so there are no food safety concerns. After thawing, continue cooking as directed in the recipe.

  • 1/2 big Shallot Chopped
  • 1-2 all Chili with Adobo Sauce Elective
  • 4 clove garlic
  • 2 15 oz can black beans drain and rinse well
  • 1 cup plain bread crumbs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Cumin
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 big Egg

  • Place onion, peppers, and garlic in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Add the black beans and stir until the black beans are partially chopped, leaving some whole or partial black beans. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.

  • Add breadcrumbs, cumin, salt, pepper, and eggs and mix well.

  • Divide mixture among 8 patties.

  • When ready to cook, choose one of the following options:
    frying pan: Heat a lightly greased skillet over medium-high heat. Cook 5 minutes per side.
    bake: Bake in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes per side.bake: Grill 5 minutes per side on an outdoor grill.
  • Serve warm on bread with desired toppings.
