Which chocolate chips should I use? Can I ignore them?

We used Guittard milk chocolate chips in this recipe to contrast dark and milk chocolate. If you like dark chocolate, use semisweet chocolate chunks. Whole chocolate chips folded in with the batter can also be successfully left out of the recipe.

Can I add nuts to these brownies?

Chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts can easily be added to this recipe. We recommend 1/2 to 2/3 cup chopped nuts.

Should I be using a metal or glass baking dish?

You can use either one. For a crispier crust and edges on the brownies, use a metal pan. For glass baking dishes, you may need to add up to 5 minutes to the baking time.

Which cocoa powder should I use?

We used Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe. Additionally, it was tested with Guittard Red Holland Process and Ghiradelli Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, all with success. Hershey’s is our favorite.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

To store the brownies, Let them cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid or a resealable plastic bag. Brownies will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days. If you don’t plan to eat the brownies within a few days, you can freeze them to extend their shelf life.

  • 10 tablespoon salted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 big Egg
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup Melted Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips


  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 9×9 metal pan with parchment paper.

  • Pour melted butter into a large mixing bowl. Beat in sugar by hand until smooth, 30 seconds.

  • Add eggs and vanilla extract. Stir for 1 minute.

  • Stir in melted chocolate until well combined.

  • Using a rubber spatula, stir together flour, cocoa powder, and salt until fully combined. Stir in chocolate chips throughout.

  • Pour into prepared pan and smooth.

  • Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Cool in the pan for 30 minutes before slicing.
