We are big fans of traditional mashed potatoes. You can never go wrong adding mashed potatoes to your dinner as a side dish. Recently, however, we’ve noticed a trend of sweet potatoes replacing regular potatoes. There are sweet potato fries, there are baked sweet potatoes, why no sweet potato mash? While regular mashed potatoes are delicious on their own, mashed sweet potatoes add a heavenly sweetness. It might also have something to do with stirring the honey and cinnamon into the sweet potatoes. You can make this any time of the year, but we especially love it during the holidays!

What’s the difference between sweet potatoes and yams?

In the United States, the terms “sweet potato” and “yam” are used interchangeably to refer to potatoes with a red skin and orange flesh. However, you may see something else at the grocery store labeled sweet potatoes with yellowish skins, while your orange-fleshed variety is labeled yams. Guess what? Both are sweet potatoes!

Those sweet potatoes you think are yams are actually black-skinned sweet potatoes. You don’t usually come across real yams in American grocery stores. True yams have brown or black skins and red, purple, or off-white flesh. Are you crazy? You thought you’d been eating yams all these years!

What’s the best way to mash sweet potatoes?

To mash sweet potatoes, you can use a traditional potato masher, a potato ricer, or a hand blender.

Pro tip:

Put the sweet potatoes in the pot, and then fill the pot with water. This prevents unnecessary splatter, which can be dangerous if you bring the water to a boil before adding the sweet potatoes.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Heat single servings in the microwave in 30-second increments until heated through.

raw material

  • 3 to 4 pound sweet potato peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt (optional)


  • Place the diced sweet potatoes in a large pot. Fill the pot with water and cover. Bring to a boil over high heat.

  • When it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer until the sweet potatoes are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain well.

  • Transfer the still hot sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Add butter, honey, cinnamon, milk, and salt (if using). Using a hand mixer, puree the potatoes until light, fluffy, and creamy, about 3 to 5 minutes. (Alternatively, you can mash the potatoes with a potato masher or ricer.) Taste the potatoes and add more salt, if desired. Serve hot.


Baked Variations: Roasting sweet potatoes brings out the different flavors because the natural sugars are caramelized during the roasting process. Wash the roasted sweet potatoes, and use a fork to poke 8 to 10 small holes in each skin for ventilation. Place them on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven for 1 hour, or until tender. Remove the skins of the sweet potatoes before combining them with the other ingredients as directed in steps 3 and 4.
