This super moist cinnamon roll swirl coffee cake is worth making from scratch! Rich, moist coffee cake is swirled with a cinnamon roll filling and topped with an easy glaze. This is to die for!

We first made a cinnamon swirl coffee cake a few years ago from a family member’s blog (yes, blogs run in the family).recipe is called honey cake. It’s absolutely delicious and we’ve made it several times since. Her recipe uses a cake mix, but we wanted a “from scratch” version because that was more of a full-time chef style. We know how easy it is to get your hands on cake mix, but trust us, the extra effort of making your coffee cake from scratch is worth it.

We’ve all experienced dry, crumbly, sub-par coffee cakes. It’s usually store bought and is always served at some sort of women’s luncheon. We make a rule to avoid coffee cake at events like this because we’ve been spoiled with this homemade coffee cake. It’s super moist, thick, and decadent…everything a coffee cake should be. The batter is thick, much thicker than a cake mix, so don’t be surprised by that. This is exactly what it should be.

Swirl options for Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake:

There are several different options for the cinnamon swirl. You can simply swirl it up like we did here, or you can layer by pouring half of the batter into the pan, making one swirl layer, then the remaining half of the batter and another swirl layer . Feel free to do what works best for you.

where is the coffee Why is it called a coffee cake?

Now, before anyone gets mad at calling it a coffee cake, let’s get one thing straight: coffee cakes don’t have coffee in them, nor should they! It’s called coffee cake because it’s served with coffee. The sweetness of the cake is perfectly balanced with the bitterness of the coffee.
