This classic coleslaw is a staple in our house. It’s the perfect addition to any summer BBQ or roast dish. Crispy cabbage coated with the most delicious, tangy and creamy dressing – the perfect balance of texture and flavor!

If you ask me, coleslaw is completely overlooked, especially since it goes so well with so many foods! It’s easy to make and a great salad side or sandwich topping. It’s a great side dish to pulled pork sandwiches, steak, seafood, or grilled chicken — just about anything! The coleslaw can be easily altered to suit your own personal taste preferences. It can be sweeter or saltier, and you can basically tweak it depending on what you’re pairing it with. If you’re feeling adventurous, we’ve included some suggestions for add-ons. Remember to invite friends because this is an awesome salad!

Do I have to shred my own cabbage? Can I use pre-shredded cabbage?

No, I prefer fresh cabbage, but if you’re pressed for time or just don’t feel like shredding it, you can use bagged shredded cabbage. You can chop the cabbage as large or as thin as you like.

What goes best with coleslaw

Coleslaw is an excellent accompaniment to many dishes. If you can keep it on ice, take it camping, picnic, or barbecue. It’s perfect on top of a pulled pork sandwich and is the perfect side dish to ribs or any roast. It’s perfect for fish tacos, and don’t forget — it’s the perfect side dish for crispy fried chicken.

How long does coleslaw keep in the fridge?

Coleslaw is best fresh but will still taste good about 3 days after making it. Make sure that when storing leftover coleslaw, it’s in an airtight container.

One Bowl Homemade Coleslaw

  • 6 cup chopped greens
  • 2 cup Shredded purple cabbage
  • 1/2 sweet onion thin slices
  • 3 radish Chopped
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper

  • Toss cabbage, onion, and carrots in a large bowl.

  • Add mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper and stir well.

  • Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours before serving.

  • Save time by using a bag of pre-shredded cabbage and carrots.
  • Want to lighten things up? Use plain Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise.
  • Don’t like creamy coleslaw? Try leaving out the mayonnaise and replacing it with 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil for balsamic coleslaw.
