Get ready for your spooky celebration! These Dark Chocolate Halloween Cookies are a great addition to any party. They’re soft, chewy, filled with chocolate and decorated with festive candies.

We are going to the holidays soon! Before we know it, we’re trick-or-treating the kids, setting the table for Thanksgiving, and coming up with the best elf ideas on the shelf to wake them up in the morning.

For me, Halloween is the official start of the holiday. Once Halloween rolls around, the rest of the year can be a bit of a blur with candy, desserts, home and home decorations. You can see why this is my favorite time of year. Who doesn’t love sweet treats, family and the comforts of home? !

Honestly, there are a few years where I kind of get off the Halloween bandwagon because I never have anything to do to celebrate. Now that I have two nephews to watch dress up and trick-or-treat with, I’m slowly (quickly) rediscovering my love for all the weird stuff that’s coming up.

One of my favorite things to do besides my nephews is making festive Halloween treats.last year i did spooky halloween bark and Pumpkin Mummy Rice Krispies.

This year it’s Dark Chocolate Halloween Cookies! Midnight dark chocolate adds to the spooky effect of these delicious cookies. Don’t let the color fool you. These cookies are soft and chewy! I used orange and white M&Ms for the decorations, but you can use any holiday candy you want! Even dark chocolate chips would work here.

One of the reasons these Halloween cookies are so soft and chewy is because I like to use my secret ingredient in so many cookie recipes: pudding. Pudding cookies are one of the softest cookies. And they’ll stay soft for days!

Pudding cookies aren’t made with real pudding, they’re just made with a pudding mix you buy at the store. Just powder! You can find it in the baking section next to the jelly. Be sure to grab the instant pudding mix. Once you have your pudding mix, you’re ready to make your Halloween cookies!

How to Make Halloween Cookies from Scratch:

A must have for Halloween cookies is something that represents the holiday season. Pay homage to a Halloween icon (i.e. a witch or a ghost) or should they be decked out in black, white and orange!

These Halloween cookies will make a festive decoration with all three types of cookies. They get that “dark” look from all the decadent chocolate. In this recipe, we’ve replaced some of the flour with dark chocolate cocoa powder. Combine with chocolate pudding to make them look like midnight.

You’ll combine the butter and sugar, then add the eggs, pudding, and dry ingredients as a next step, just like a traditional cookie recipe. You want to make sure everything is well mixed before adding the candy.

Another difference between these cookies and traditional cookies is of course the Halloween candy! I used orange and white M&Ms, but you can use any holiday candy you like.

You can also bake these Halloween cookies just like traditional chocolate chip cookies! Mine took about 11 minutes to get the perfect consistency.

Because these Halloween cookies are so similar to the regular chocolate chip cookie recipe, I wanted to share with you some real cookie-making tips I tried!

4 Tips for Perfect Cookies Every Time:

  1. Make sure to cream the butter with the brown and granulated sugar within the allotted time. When you whip butter and sugar together, the sugar cuts into the butter and creates air pockets. This is what keeps the cookies from baking high and not falling apart. It also makes them thick and chewy!
  2. Measure flour and cocoa powder correctly. To measure it perfectly, spoon the flour into the measuring cup and scrape it off the top.
  3. Use parchment paper! A silicone baking mat works great too, but I swear by parchment paper. It produces even baking and the cookies stay thick and chewy throughout.
  4. Use 1/4 cup of cookie dough per cookie. Yes, that’s a lot of cookie dough! But that’s what makes them so nice and chunky. You’ll think it’s a lot, but don’t worry, it’s the perfect amount.
  5. When removed from the oven, top with additional M&Ms or Halloween candy. There are a lot of chocolate chips in the batter, but adding a few more to the top of the cookies when you take them out of the oven makes them look perfect and festive.

Once they’re baked, you can do one of two things: bring them to your party and eat them right away or freeze them for later.

Dark Chocolate Halloween Cookies

When I know I won’t have a lot of time, especially when the holidays get really hectic, I like to make the cookies ahead of time and keep them in the freezer so I’m always ready. These cookies stay fresh in the freezer for up to 3 months! That means you can make them today (hint, hint) and they’ll be perfect for Halloween.

You can also freeze the dough if you like! The same rules apply. Simply freeze the dough and bake immediately (1 minute more) and you’ll have fresh cookies.
