Milk options for thick Italian hot chocolate:

If you don’t drink dairy, you can use your favorite lactose-free or plant-based milk substitute. While you might want to try using heavy cream to make it thicker, we don’t recommend it as it will become more pudding-like.

Tips for warming milk:

When it comes to heating milk, gentle and slow is the way to go. If the milk is heated too much or too quickly, it may burn. Yes, you can burn milk and it’s gross. Constant stirring helps prevent scorching as it keeps the liquid flowing, so any liquid should not touch the sides of the pot long enough for scorching to occur.

You can use salted or unsalted butter in your hot chocolate.

Chocolate Options:

Feel free to adjust the depth of chocolate based on the type of chocolate you are using. Some people prefer whole milk chocolate, while others prefer darker chocolates. Personally, we like to use a mix of semisweet and milk chocolate. You can choose lighter, darker colors, or mix and match to achieve your perfect taste. You can even use white chocolate chips for a fun twist!

Note in advance:

If you want to make the hot chocolate ahead of time, simply transfer the finished hot chocolate to a slow cooker set to heat. This pattern will last approximately 2 hours.

Storage and Reheating Instructions:

Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days. Serve cold or hot. If needed, reheat in a saucepan on the stove over medium-low heat until heated through.
