Make authentic hummus at home with this simple and delicious recipe. We also offer two popular flavor options, Garlic Hummus and Roasted Red Bell Pepper Hummus.

Hummus is a great snack for almost any occasion. It’s light, healthy and delicious. It’s a fun alternative to our usual favorite tangy cheese dips, but it’s also a great addition to any dip or potluck. We like to serve it with pita bread and bagel chips as a snack.

Hummus features chickpea beans as a base with tahini, olive oil, and a few simple spices and herbs. Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds that has a rich, nutty flavor. Making your own hummus is super easy and requires only a few ingredients. If you like it or can’t find it, you can substitute peanut butter for the tahini. You can also change the style using the plugins we discuss below. This recipe is vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. You can’t beat it!

  • Are Chickpeas the Same as Chickpeas?

Yes. They are the same, and you may see them called that in stores.

  • Do I have to shell every chickpea?

unnecessary. In fact, it’s not necessary to pull the shell off at all, but removing the shell does result in a smoother texture. You can choose to dehull all or part of the chickpeas.

  • What should I serve with hummus?

Hummus is a light and tasty side dish or appetizer. It’s perfect for dipping veggies, or with any chips, crackers, bagel crisps, or pita bread corners. Some of our favorite veggies include sliced cucumbers, carrots, and bell peppers.

  • What should I use to garnish or flavor my hummus?

Hummus is easy to garnish or add flavor to. A little experimentation will help you figure out what you like best. Some tasty options are: chopped parsley, paprika, pine nuts, chopped olives, or diced roasted red bell peppers.

Popular variants:

Some popular hummus flavors are garlic, roasted garlic, and roasted red bell pepper. Here’s how to make them:

    • Garlic Hummus: To make garlic hummus, add 4-6 extra cloves of garlic to the recipe and mix well with the other ingredients.
    • Roasted Garlic Hummus: For roasted garlic hummus, roast the garlic first. This is done by cutting off the top, or narrow end, of the garlic bulb, then drizzled with olive oil. Wrap in aluminum foil and bake in a 400°F oven for 30-40 minutes. This reduces the strength of the garlic and changes the flavor. Swap the two cloves of garlic in the original recipe for a whole garlic. It’s delicious!
    • Roasted Red Bell Peppers: To make hummus with this flavor, you’ll first need to roast red bell peppers or purchase a can of roasted red bell peppers. A 12-ounce jar contains about one whole red bell pepper. Drain the jar and add it to the original recipe along with the chickpeas and mix thoroughly.
