Rice batter covered in melted peanut butter and chocolate, dusted with powdered sugar — you won’t be able to resist slushy pals! This classic snack is easy to make and addictive.

We grew up with muddy buddies every holiday season! This homemade snack shows up at family gatherings, sleepovers, and after-school functions. Now that we’re older, we understand why: They’re made with simple, easy-to-find ingredients—and an addictive treat that’s accessible to all peanut butter and chocolate lovers. Sometimes called puppy food, it is a naturally gluten-free party snack. Great news for GF snack lovers! You’ll often see it made around the holidays, but we’re a firm believer in offering it any time of year. Whenever you decide to gather a batch of slushy buddies, you’ll be happy to know that the entire recipe takes about 20 minutes to whip up.

Why are Muddy Buddies called Puppy Chow?

Muddy Buddies are also known as puppy food. Why? Because the little Chex bits mixed in with melted chocolate and peanut butter look a bit like dog food – at least until you add the powdered sugar coating! This sweet treat originated in the American Midwest. Some remember it being made in the 1960s, but General Mills (the company that makes Chex) officially developed the recipe in 2002.

Can I use my microwave?

Absolutely! If you don’t want to melt everything on the stovetop, you can use the microwave. Place ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1 minute. Stir, then continue to melt in 1-minute increments until the mixture is smooth.

Troubleshooting: Wet and Muddy Buddies

You need to make sure your muddy buddy is completely cool, or you could end up with a mess. To do this, spread the slushy mates evenly on a parchment- or wax-paper-lined baking sheet. Chilling slightly before serving will help keep the granola from absorbing too much of the chocolate mixture!

Serve with slushy buddy in a bowl.

Storage Instructions:

The most important thing to remember here is to keep your muddy buddies in an airtight container, otherwise they will spoil quickly. You can store them at room temperature so they’ll last up to 2 weeks – if you’re not eating them all at once, you are!
