This fun recipe came about because my son wanted to have a LEGO themed birthday party. I’m not the most crafty person. In fact, I often call myself an anti-craft. I just have no patience! I knew I needed something super easy and it couldn’t be easier to make Rice Krispies!

These easy-to-make LEGO Hearts treats are just traditional rice cracker treats cut into rectangles, sprinkled with icing sugar and topped with M&Ms. It’s pretty simple, but you might need a few tricks to help you do it. Obviously I’m not the craftiest person, so I always need some tricks to make things cute!

The key to making this recipe work is using icing sugar. Icing is not frosting! It starts out as a viscous liquid that hardens when exposed to air. This works really well for this particular application, as the icing melts into the rough surface of the popcorn candies, creating a smooth and shiny surface, just like real LEGO bricks. A bonus is that since the frosting hardens, they can be easily packed without mess!

You should be able to find cookie icing all made and dyed in the baking section of your supermarket. If you’d like to make your own frosting, here’s the recipe here, but it does complicate things, so if you’re shooting a simple food craft, stick to store-bought. You can use any color you like, just make sure you have M&M’s coordinating colors.

tip:

  • Cool your rice crackers completely before cutting.
  • Make sure the top of your rice cracker is as flat as possible
  • Use one color of icing at a time as the icing hardens quickly.
  • Use a knife to spread the icing lightly, but don’t add too much icing as it may run over the edges.
  • Turn the M&Ms “m” side down so the “m” doesn’t appear
