In the United States, the terms “sweet potato” and “yam” are used interchangeably to refer to the potato-like, red-skinned, orange-fleshed item. However, you may see something else at the grocery store labeled sweet potatoes with yellowish skins, while your orange-fleshed variety is labeled yams. Guess what? Both are sweet potatoes! The kind of sweet potato that you thought was yam is simply black-skinned sweet potato. You don’t usually come across real yams in American grocery stores. True yams have brown or black skins and red, purple, or off-white flesh.

We prefer pomegranate sweet potatoes, both for flavor and color! However, you can use orange-fleshed or white-fleshed sweet potatoes.

Olive Oil and Butter in the Most Delicious Candied Yams:

We use olive oil instead of butter, making this recipe dairy-free. However, if you like butter in your candied yams, feel free to substitute them for butter.

Can I use canned yams?

Unfortunately, canned yams will just turn into mush in this recipe, and we don’t recommend them.

Time-saving tips for making ahead:

If you want to prepare this ahead of time, you can precook the yams before tossing with all the other ingredients. After cooking until fork tender and coated with the sauce mixture, pour it all into the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. By precooking the yams, you will drastically reduce baking time. When everything is warming up and the sauce is caramelizing, your candied yams are ready.

Storage and Reheating Instructions:

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat single servings in the microwave or large quantities in an oven preheated to 350 degrees until heated through.

  • 4 yam peeled and cut into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1/2 cup Orange juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a medium baking dish.
