A classic star bread recipe with a twist – rich and creamy peanut butter! This delicious tearaway bread is bursting with chocolate and hazelnut flavors. It’s the ultimate holiday treat and makes a great addition to any gathering!

Star Bread is one of our favorite things to eat during the holidays. Also known as snowflake bread, it closely resembles – you guessed it – a large (and edible!) snowflake. It’s usually made with cinnamon and sugar, but it’s even better when you swap them out for peanut butter. Made with hazelnuts, this spread has a rich chocolate flavor. If you don’t have a jar at home, we recommend you go out and get one! It’s delicious on toast or as a dip for fruit. And, of course, you’ll want to give this Nutella star bread recipe a healthy helping. Don’t hesitate to lick your spoon after adding it – in fact, we encourage it!

Dough Options

If you’re looking for a shortcut to make this peanut butter star bread even easier, you can definitely use store-bought dough. We used a homemade cinnamon roll dough recipe (also outlined on the recipe card below) to make ours, but don’t judge if you want to use something from the supermarket! Here are some options:

  • meringue dough
  • crescent bed sheet
  • Pie Crust Dough (You can also try our homemade recipe)

How do you make light and fluffy bread?

This is one of the most common questions when making homemade Nutella bread: how do I make sure it’s light and fluffy instead of hard and crusty? The texture of your bread depends a lot on the amount of yeast you use. Follow the recipe directions carefully and you’ll end up with light and fluffy results! Just be sure to avoid over-kneading the batter and over-baking.

top notch idea

You can eat Nutella bread as is – the hazelnut spread is delightful, and you don’t have to worry about adding too much else. That said, you can add some fun add-ons to your bread if you want:

  • Homemade Frosting
  • Nutella sugar coating
  • Melted Peanut Butter Drizzle
  • powdered sugar
  • granulated sugar

instruct

Dough Recipe:

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and eggs. Add the flour. Use the dough hook and turn on low speed.

  • Once the flour begins to incorporate into the dough, increase the speed to medium. Add more flour as needed to pull the dough away from the sides of the bowl.

  • The dough mixture should be soft and sticky, but not stick to your hands. Add more or less flour until the dough reaches the desired consistency. The amount of flour you add when making bread is always an approximation and should be determined by feel.

  • Transfer dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a towel and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Shaping and Baking Instructions:

  • Take the dough and divide it into 4 equal parts. Roll each piece into a large circle, about the width of the baking sheet. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • Place one circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread 1/3 of the Nutella over the top, making sure to leave 1/4 inch around the edge of the circle.

  • Continue layering the remaining sections, but lay the 4th and final section flat on top. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • Use a small 2″ bowl to mark the center (or eyeball), then use a knife to cut 16 equal lines, leaving the small circle in the center. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • Take two strands and twist in opposite directions 1-2 times, then pinch the edges to seal. Continue to fit the pieces together until all the pieces fit together to form a large star shape. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • Bake immediately in a 350°F oven (do not rise) for 20-25 minutes. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Serve once cool, frosting with your favorite icing sugar or powdered sugar. ⁣⁣
