Savory Tomato Pie is a classic Southern comfort food. Layers of tomato, onion, basil and cheese are baked in a thin pie crust shell for an irresistibly delicious pie!

What kind of tomatoes should I use for tomato pie?

The prettiest tomato pies are made with heirloom tomatoes in several different colors. If you’re not too concerned about appearance, we recommend using plum tomatoes like Roma tomatoes, as they have the least amount of liquid. However, any garden tomato can be used to make tomato pie.

Can I use frozen pie crust for tomato pie?

Tomato pie can be made using homemade pie crust or frozen pie crust. Either way, the pie crust needs to be baked before making the tomato pie. Bake the empty crust according to the directions on the frozen pie crust. If using homemade, be sure to pierce the bottom and sides of your crust with a fork and use pie weights or raw beans to weigh down your crust.

Can I Freeze Tomato Pie?

It is not recommended that you freeze Southern style tomato pie. If frozen and then baked, the moisture in the tomatoes and cheese will cause mush.

Tomato Pie in a Pie Plate

  • 1 Baked Deep Dish Pie Shells
  • 5 big tomato slice
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 sweet onion thin slices
  • 8 large fresh basil leaves Chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

instruct

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Place tomato slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and let sit for 10 minutes to absorb moisture. Reserve some slices for garnish topping, if desired.

  • Layer the tomato slices, onion, and basil into the pie shell. Season with black pepper.

  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, mayonnaise, and sour cream. Spread on top of the tomatoes to cover the top of the pie. Arrange decorative pieces on top, if desired.

  • Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for about 30 minutes, until the cheese is lightly browned. Serve hot.
