The sausage gravy has a good selection of sausages, we prefer crumbled sausage. Use country-style ground sausage for an easy option, or spice things up with maple and sage ground sausage or spicy pepperoni. Pick a flavor that sounds good. If you live in an area where you can only find casing sausage, you can cut the sausage into large chunks, or depending on the sausage, you can take it out of the casing and make crumble. There’s really no wrong way to enjoy your sausage gravy.

How can I make my sausage gravy gluten free?

This recipe uses 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour as a thickener. You can also use 2 tablespoons cornstarch instead of flour to thicken sausage gravy for a gluten-free option.

  • 1 pound sausage
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 3 cup milk
  • salt and pepper to try

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped sausage. Break sausage into small pieces with a spatula and cook until browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes.

  • Stir in all-purpose flour until no white powder remains.

  • Slowly add milk, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

  • Season with salt and pepper. Serve warm on toast or crackers.
