Slow Cooker Carne Asada

The Slow Cooker Carne Asada makes making steak tacos a breeze! The flank steak is slowly cooked in a delicious sauce that will blow your mind!

Traditionally, asada yakiniku is all about the marinade. In this slow cooker version, I’ve turned my usual marinade into a sauce full of flavor. The steak is then doused in the sauce and slowly cooked to perfection. While it’s certainly an unconventional option, it’s a great “set it and forget it” meal.

My recipes are based on recipes from world famous Mexican gourmet chef Rick Bayless. If you ever get the chance to go to his restaurant Frontera Grill in Chicago…go for it! This is untrue!

Is skirt steak the same as flank steak?

Skirt steak and flank steak are similar cuts of beef that are often used interchangeably in recipes. Flank steak is a thicker, wider cut that comes from the belly. The fibers are tough and long. Skirt steak comes from the diaphragm muscle, which contains tougher fibers. Both cuts should slice thinly, against the grain. Skirt steaks should not be cooked above medium.

What’s the best cut of meat for carne asada?

Carne asada is traditionally prepared with skirt or flank steak. The two cuts are very similar, but I prefer the meatier one, the flank steak. You can also use sirloin flaps or brisket. Flank steak, sirloin, and brisket are all excellent options for the slow cooker, while half steak may be tough when cooked over medium.

Slow Cooker Carne Asada Taco with Jalapenos and Cilantro Chips

Pro tip: When cutting meat, be sure to cut against the grain. In both cuts, it’s easy to see the grain go through the meat. It looks like lines. Do not cut parallel to these lines, always cut perpendicular to them. The grain provides a natural breaking point in the meat. If you cut against them, you’ll end up with tons of breaks on each piece, which will keep it from getting chewy.

Service suggestion: Carne Asada can be eaten on its own or in tacos and burritos.
