It seems like everyone grew up on French toast. It’s certainly considered one of the classic hot breakfast foods of our childhoods. However, this is not what we grew up eating ourselves from! Breakfast is traditionally quick and easy, making busy mornings less hectic. As parents, we fully understand the dilemma of choosing between a hearty hot breakfast or a bowl of instant cereal. Too bad our parents hadn’t heard of breakfast casserole. You can still have a hearty hot breakfast, but the cooking time in the oven is completely hands-off! Prepare your casserole the night before so that when you wake up, you can simply pop it in the oven and let it do the work for you.

Flavor options for French Toast Casserole:

A really fun twist is to use sweetened coffee creamer instead of a homemade liquid spice blend. To do this, add 2 ½ cups of your favorite coffee creamer to the mixture along with 8 eggs. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Only egg whites?

You can always use just egg whites, although we prefer to use whole eggs. The recipe calls for 2 egg whites to be substituted for every 1 egg.

Bread Options:

You can use any type of bread for this French Toast Casserole. French bread and other bakery-style breads work in addition to sliced sandwich-type bread. If you want something special, you can use white or sourdough bread. Yum!

Adding berries is optional. At our house, we have half blueberries and half vegetarian. You can use frozen berries, but keep them small. You don’t need a fully cooked strawberry, just a slice.

Note in advance:

You can do this up to 24 hours in advance. Prepare as directed, but do not bake. Cover uncooked casserole with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 24 hours. When ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap and bake normally. This casserole is perfect for holiday mornings and busy weekends.

Pro tip: The syrup you use can make all the difference. For a French Toast Casserole that will absolutely blow your mind, use our Liquid Cinnamon Roll Syrup recipe. It will surprise you!

Pour syrup from a ceramic carafe over a French toast casserole.
