What’s the difference between sweet potatoes and yams?

In the United States, the terms “sweet potato” and “yam” are used interchangeably to refer to potatoes with a red skin and orange flesh. However, you may see something else at the grocery store labeled sweet potatoes with yellowish skins, while your orange-fleshed variety is labeled yams. Guess what? Both are sweet potatoes!

Those sweet potatoes you think are yams are actually black-skinned sweet potatoes. You don’t usually come across real yams in American grocery stores. True yams have brown or black skins and red, purple, or off-white flesh. Are you crazy? You thought you’d been eating yams all these years!

What are the benefits of eating sweet potatoes?

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. Not only are they high in vitamin A, but they’re also a good source of manganese, copper, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin B6. They also contain moderate amounts of potassium, fiber and niacin. Overall, sweet potatoes are part of a balanced, healthy diet.
